Constipation

Now that I have your attention with my indelicate post title, let me explain that cancer patients are universally beset with either constipation or diarrhea.  Dang, I can never spell the D word right!  Thank you spell-check!

Constipation usually is a result of trying not to live in pain.  It seems most painkillers will cause it.  I try to eat a lot of fruit and thanks to some lovely ladies this week who sent me an Edible Arrangement, I had some FANTASTIC fruit to eat.  J  But even lots of fruit doesn’t cut it sometimes.  And thus, it’s on to Phillip’s Milk of Magnesia.  I remember a Gallagher bit about constipation.  He was making fun of the products that promise ‘no cramping’ ‘stool softening’, etc.  Gallagher said that when he is constipated, he wants a BOMB!  Amen brother.

Now, let’s get past that fascinating subject and on to a strange time in the hospital at the New Year.  I had several visitors, amazingly all at the same time.  One of the hospital’s admins came to see me, as well.  She was perturbed because I had no religion listed on my paperwork.  I just find it easier to leave it blank than to have to explain that just because I am pagan, I don’t worship your devil-figure.

So, she just came right out and asked me, and being under the influence of some interesting drugs, I told her, “I’m a pagan.”  You would have thought I told her I was a commie baby eater!  She got pale, started to back from the room, when one of my visitors told her, “But she’s a GOOD one!”  Oh my gosh, I cracked up.  Anyway, we never saw THAT admin person again.

I’ve always thought that spirituality should be between you and your chosen deities.  You can have a more personal relationship and communication that way.  But I understand the need for a community-based spirituality.  You have like-minded people, willing to support you, and give you comfort in troubling times.  My sister is a Christian Minister, and a more loving woman you will never find.  She writes incredible prayers, and I know how much she loves me.

In the books about coping that I am reading, there is an emphasis on spirituality being a boon to your coping mechanism.  I find it soothing to write prayers.  As a pagan, you are free to express your devotions in the most simple or the most elaborate means.  I like to keep it simple.  Especially since the brain tumors. :D

Love and hugs to all!

TWO ANKLES!

I have two ankles, and that's as opposed to lately having one ankle and one tree trunk.  Looks like the Arixtra is doing a good job!  I haven't had two ankles since I was in the hospital back in September.  I do still have some leg pain, but it wasn't as bad today as it has been.  So, I'm pretty darned happy!

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving.  We're just celebrating with the normal household, minus my sweet Quito, this year.  We got our turkey and trimmings from a farm in Arkansas this year.  Last year we had gotten a ham from them, and it was spectacular.  So I have high hopes for this turkey. :)

There is so much for which to be thankful, but number one on my list is my dear family.  We're all over the place, but we try hard to keep in touch, and provide love and support to each other as best we can.  It's these connections that keep me going.  I love you all so much.

If you celebrate Thanksgiving, please enjoy.  And if you don't ... just make sure you give and get lots of hugs.

And One Is Lost

It has been a disheartening day in the hospital.  The code blue alarm just went off, and it's here in the Progressive Care Unit (AKA telemetry.)  Even more disconcerting?  They just came and closed my door, so it is one of my neighbors.  I said a prayer.

Yes, that's how it has been today; lots of codes.  Sad.

I might be taken off the heparin drip today, then I might be able to go home soon....please!

Anyway, the last code has left me a bit shaken, probably mostly because they closed my door. I don't know WHY that bothered me so much.   I need to get a grip.

Okay, I just wanted to let everyone know I'm still here...in the Big House, that is.  My friend, Annette, came to visit, yesterday, bearing See's Candy!  YAY!

Be safe and stay well, all.

Transfusions

I got a unit of blood, starting at 1AM. This was my first ever transfusion, and made me very grateful to EVERYONE that donates blood.  I'll be getting another unit soon.  Rebecca, my RN, has done my blood draw, and Allison just took my vital signs.

Lack of sleep is not helping me get well, but it IS making me thankful for every bit of sleep I can get.

I had a blood pressure of 95/23 last night, but this morning, it was 112/60.  Much better!

It's 4:21AM, so I am going to try for a little more sleep....or I'll call my sister Wendy, who I *know* will be up.

In Hospital

This morning I headed to Ironwood Cancer & Research Center for my CT scan.  When I got home my oncologist called to tell me to get to my hospital's ER...the scan found a blood clot in my lungs.

But, he also told me that there was tumor shrinkage!  It looks like we are getting great results from this chemo.

Anyway, I am now in Banner Baywood and will be here until Tuesday, probably.  I'm on a heparin drip, hopefully disintegrating the clot.

Take care, all.  I love you.  :)

Ai Carumba

Well, we had a little scare here.  Jane's currently in the hospital, undergoing some tests.  I'm hoping she can come home today.  She had some pain in her throat, but not a sore throat, and there was concern that it could be heart-related, and thus the tests.

So far, all heart type tests are coming back fine.  Now they are looking at gastric things.  One thing I will say is that they are not leaving any stones unturned at this point.  They were about to do something with barium the last time I spoke with her.  And if something were to appear, they were going to scope her.  I just tried calling, but got an elderly man, quite obviously well-drugged on pain killers, and he hung up on me. :D

Now I am waiting for the scooter lift installation place to call and tell me to come get my Equinox.  And apparently, I am waiting in vain for someone to call to reschedule that PET Scan.  I guess I'll call again, or just tell Dr. F that they dropped the ball, and all hell will break loose. ... am I that mean?  Depends on the day. ;)

I'm really tired, for as you can imagine, I did not sleep very well last night.  Jane and Nancy headed to the ER around 4PM, and no one called until about 7, and even then there wasn't much to tell.  I think it was 10PM when Nancy called and said they were keeping Jane in the hospital.  Blech.  The Big House.  At least she had her Nintendo DS with her. ;)

I hope that Mobility place calls soon... I want to go to work tomorrow!

Live long and prosper, all.
